Questions we hear first

How do I try a class?

Pick a class from the schedule and book a trial visit on our registration page. You can also call the studio on a weekday evening.

What is sabar?

Sabar is a family of drums from Senegal, played with one hand and one stick, and the name of the dances that answer them. In class we teach each dance with its rhythm, and we say where each one comes from.

Do I need to know the dances?

No. Beginner classes teach the first steps slowly, and the open level welcomes anyone who has come to a few classes.

Do the drummers play in every class?

Not every class. The schedule marks the classes danced to live drums, and the others use recorded music.

What should I wear?

Clothes you can move in, and bare feet or socks. A wrap skirt or a length of cloth at the hips is welcome and easy to find.

What is a level, and how does a dancer move up?

A level is a group of dancers working on the same steps and rhythms. A dancer moves up when the teacher says they are ready and they agree. There is no test.

What are the extras?

A wrap and head tie for the spring performance, a production charge for each dancer and tickets for guests.

What if we miss a class?

A missed class can be made up in another class of the same level, or the level just below it, within the same session.
