Saturday mornings: clapping, stepping and answering the drum.

Each class has a dancer teaching and a drummer playing, and the steps come one at a time with the rhythm that goes with them. Dancers learn when to listen, when to answer the drum and when to take a turn in the circle. At noon the family class welcomes all ages, with a grown-up and a child side by side.

What a class is like

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm-up in a circle

Clapping a rhythm together, then stepping it, so the beat is in the feet before the dancing starts.

  2. 02

    Step 2: A step at a time

The teacher shows each step from the front and from behind, and the drummer plays the rhythm it belongs to.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Call and response

The drummer calls and the dancers answer, then the dancers call and the drummer follows.

  4. 04

Step 4: A turn in the circle

Each dancer takes a short turn in the middle, or stays at the edge and claps. Both are welcome.
